Watchers in the FEAR Dimension returns for a second year, as we bring you our bonus Halloween special, in which we discuss two Doctor Who-related horror films. This year, we talk about Hammer Horror’s Scars of Dracula (featuring Patrick Troughton) and the Carry On franchise’s Carry On Screaming (featuring Jon Pertwee). Join us as we discuss the serious and the silly in these two films, from vomiting bats to scientists with strange accents to Patrick Troughton’s monobrow to goth girls, and to Christopher Lee just being Christopher Lee.
Along the way, Reilly gets to once again try his hand as moderator, Don tries to out-do Anthony’s encyclopedic knowledge of Doctor Who actors, Anthony gets pedantic, and Julie does her music thing (no surprises there). And so we get to another truly legendary story of the Tom Baker-era – Genesis of the Daleks. Will the Watchers love this as much as fandom-as-a-whole does, or will the giant clam prove to be just too much? Will the Davros/Nyder pairing be as I C O N I C as expected? And will Julie ever get over the new Production Team’s aversion to women and, as a result, how this serial becomes Sausage Fest of the Daleks?

It’s time for a surprise bonus episode drop! The entire gang is getting together to discuss the recent animation of Season 5’s The Abominable Snowmen. So many questions – have Big Finish Creative finally fixed the problem of super long arms? Will the Archer-style animation work with the Yeti? And will animation turn a tedious, padded story into anything other than a tedious, padded story?
Along the way, Don puts himself in the shoes of the real Yeti, Julie enthuses over the way the animation handled Padmasambhava (aka Panda Salad Bar), Anthony gets highly critical of how the Yeti are animated, and Reilly feels some nostalgia for the Loose Cannon reconstructions. The entire crew find themselves appreciating the character models of the Tibetan Monks.

We’re back to stretch out the Pertwee era for just one more episode, as our good friend R. Alan Siler joins the show to interview our regular cast about the entirety of the Pertwee era – the good, the bad, and the outright Masterful! Join us as we meander through a conversation about the joys of Delgado and UNIT, the best supporting characters, the pitfalls of bad CSO and overuse of synthesizers, and a dissection of the development of the Third Doctor.
Along the way, Don ponders whether the Master cooked fish in the UNIT microwave, Anthony asks whether anyone on the Production Team actually knew any women, Julie manages to avoid mentioning Benton while the crew talk about UNIT (until prompted, at least), Alan draws parallels between the development of the Third and Twelfth Doctors, and Reilly issues a plea for Pertwee’s interview of Shatner to be re-uploaded to the internet. Anthony and Julie get together for our Season 11 Big Finish bonus episode, as they are off to Hong Kong in an alternative universe to discuss Sympathy for the Devil from the Doctor Who: Unbound range! This episode was recorded before the news broke of the sad passing of David Warner, and is dedicated to his memory. He was an amazing actor, and will be missed by so, so many people. Our thoughts continue to be with his friends and family.
Along the way, Julie finds herself thinking that there’s something more to the Buddhist Abbott than meets the eye (or ear?), and Anthony wonders what happened to the other mind parasites that arrived on Earth in the regular Doctor Who universe. Once again, we have reached the end of another season, so join us as we look back on the entirety of Season 11. From the highs of Benton punching a General in Invasion of the Dinosaurs, to the lows of… well, the entirety of The Monster of Peladon, we talk about it all with our usual blend of awards, a look back on our metrics and scores from the season, and questions from our social media followers. It’s definitely an interesting one – but what about this season is particularly “Self-Indulgent and Unnecessary?”
Along the way, Julie continues her Benton love, Reilly explains why John Dearth as Lupton is the Best Supporting Actor, Anthony does his best Neska impression (and is still somehow does a better job of conveying emotion than Jenny Laird), and Don confesses his bizarre love of the cliffhanger from Part Three of Death to the Daleks. The entire crew continue to express their disdain for the twelve-and-a-half minute chase scene from Planet of the Spiders.

This episode, the Watchers return to Metebelis III as they exasperatedly take on the final Pertwee serial with Planet of the Spiders. Complete with a former salesman plotting revenge through the accumulation of power while at a Buddhist retreat (wut?) and a mindlessly self-indulgent chase scene, is this the story that will finally break the Watchers (or just Reilly)?
Along the way, Anthony struggles to make sense of the Spiders’ power structure, Julie picks up on one particular element inspiring a major device for 2008’s Series 4 episode Turn Left, Don rages at the brazen attempt to add to canon for no good reason, and Reilly finds Lupton’s plan so utterly baffling. The entire crew despairs over the mindless self-indulgence that is the Part Two chase scene.

We’re heading back to Peladon for the penultimate serial of the Pertwee era, where a new painfully unassertive monarch has to deal with an uppity religious advisor, rumours of their God being unhappy, difficulty with members of the Galactic Federation, and a minor miner rebellion thrown in for good effect. All stretched out to six episodes, rather than four! Dear god. At least it’ll make for an entertaining conversation!
Along the way, Reilly theorizes that the Doctor deliberately dressed in green, as he was expecting to see Alpha Centauri again, Julie is delighted that someone is finally calling out the Doctor on his incessant name-dropping, Don does his best Alpha Centauri impression, and Anthony finds himself wishing that this was an out-and-out comedy. The entire team discusses how absolutely bonkers Ettis is as a character.

Kklak! It’s the Annual Malcolm Hulke Lizard Extravaganza®, as we bang-a-gong for the children of the revolution as we take on T. Rexes in Invasion of the Dinosaurs! The Doctor and Sarah return to London, only to be confronted by a conspiracy to which almost everyone is involved, and some of Ray Harryhausen’s cast-offs. Ah well, you can’t win ‘em all.
Over the course of the episode, Reilly explains his suspicions on how Spielberg may have approached this as the low water mark for the effects of Jurassic Park, Anthony compares the colour and the black & white versions of Part One, Don theorises that Benton is the only sane member of UNIT at this point, and Julie is happy that Benton is finally allowed to have some tea. The entire crew take turns at comparing deserted London to various horror movies.

It’s a fresh start as we kick off Season 11 with Robert Holmes’ excellent The Time Warrior, in which we say “hello!” to both the legendary Sarah Jane Smith and the iconic monsters known as the Sontarans! Add into the mix some comedy Saxons, some pathetic Normans, and plenty of sci-fi elements, and we’re onto a winner. Maybe. You’ll have to listen to find out what we actually think of this one!
Over the course of the episode, Anthony finds himself amused by Lynx not knowing what a woman is, Don finds himself thinking of ways to add more suspense to the plot, Julie complains at the length of time it takes to get a woman on screen (9 mins and 34 seconds), and Reilly questions some of the directing. The entire crew find themselves once again questioning the Brigadier’s sanity.

Join us as we talk stereotypes, hippies, and charismatic computers, and (with sorrow) say goodbye to a companion that we have really grown to love.
Over the course of the episode, Anthony brings out the Welsh side of his heritage, Don imagines a version of this story where BOSS was a computerized version of Tobias Vaughn, Julie finds herself disappointed at seeing the Brigadier in a suit, and Reilly wonders whether the loudness of the Doctor’s plaid killed the giant fly. The entire crew fall in love with the Doctor’s various disguises in this serial.

This episode, we go on a tour of the galaxy’s finest jail cells, featuring appearances from the Master! Ogrons! A few Daleks! Draconians! And future humanity’s most dictatorial regime to date! It’s a rather grim vision of the future in Frontier in Space! Join us as we keep track of the number of times that the Doctor and Jo are incarcerated, and generally despair at how so many people *on both sides* repeatedly ignore what they’re trying to say.
Over the course of the episode, Don advances his theories about the Third Doctor’s anecdotes being most nonsense, Anthony denies the possibility that General Williams could be his future descendant, Julie praises Jo’s choice of (sensible) outfit, and Reilly dreams of seeing the Ogron version of The Office! The entire crew find themselves enamoured with the world building presented in the story.

Join us as we talk budget serials, grey worlds, Holmesian double acts, monster cameos, and the Doctor’s long-awaited return to regular space-and-time adventuring!
Over the course of the episode, Anthony finds himself alone in appreciating the bureaucrats of the serial, Julie continues to find herself please with the direction of the scores this season, Reilly enthuses over the monster design, and Don dreams of re-editing the entire serial.
