Just like that, we’ve reached the end of Tom Baker’s first season with Revenge of the Cybermen. And oh boy, is this one a doozy. Could this possibly be the worst Cybermen story to date? Well, obviously, you’ll have to listen to this podcast episode to find out what we think in Shoulder Rub of Death!

It’s time for a surprise bonus episode drop! The entire gang is getting together to discuss the recent animation of Season 5’s The Abominable Snowmen. So many questions – have Big Finish Creative finally fixed the problem of super long arms? Will the Archer-style animation work with the Yeti? And will animation turn a tedious, padded story into anything other than a tedious, padded story?
Along the way, Don puts himself in the shoes of the real Yeti, Julie enthuses over the way the animation handled Padmasambhava (aka Panda Salad Bar), Anthony gets highly critical of how the Yeti are animated, and Reilly feels some nostalgia for the Loose Cannon reconstructions. We’re back to stretch out the Pertwee era for just one more episode, as our good friend R. Alan Siler joins the show to interview our regular cast about the entirety of the Pertwee era – the good, the bad, and the outright Masterful! Join us as we meander through a conversation about the joys of Delgado and UNIT, the best supporting characters, the pitfalls of bad CSO and overuse of synthesizers, and a dissection of the development of the Third Doctor.

Anthony and Julie get together for our Season 11 Big Finish bonus episode, as they are off to Hong Kong in an alternative universe to discuss Sympathy for the Devil from the Doctor Who: Unbound range! Once again, we have reached the end of another season, so join us as we look back on the entirety of Season 11. From the highs of Benton punching a General in Invasion of the Dinosaurs, to the lows of… well, the entirety of The Monster of Peladon, we talk about it all with our usual blend of awards, a look back on our metrics and scores from the season, and questions from our social media followers. It’s definitely an interesting one – but what about this season is particularly “Self-Indulgent and Unnecessary?”

This episode, the Watchers return to Metebelis III as they exasperatedly take on the final Pertwee serial with Planet of the Spiders. Complete with a former salesman plotting revenge through the accumulation of power while at a Buddhist retreat (wut?) and a mindlessly self-indulgent chase scene, is this the story that will finally break the Watchers (or just Reilly)?
Along the way, Anthony struggles to make sense of the Spiders’ power structure, Julie picks up on one particular element inspiring a major device for 2008’s Series 4 episode Turn Left, Don rages at the brazen attempt to add to canon for no good reason, and Reilly finds Lupton’s plan so utterly baffling. The entire crew despairs over the mindless self-indulgence that is the Part Two chase scene.

We’re heading back to Peladon for the penultimate serial of the Pertwee era, where a new painfully unassertive monarch has to deal with an uppity religious advisor, rumours of their God being unhappy, difficulty with members of the Galactic Federation, and a minor miner rebellion thrown in for good effect. All stretched out to six episodes, rather than four! Dear god. At least it’ll make for an entertaining conversation!
Along the way, Reilly theorizes that the Doctor deliberately dressed in green, as he was expecting to see Alpha Centauri again, Julie is delighted that someone is finally calling out the Doctor on his incessant name-dropping, Don does his best Alpha Centauri impression, and Anthony finds himself wishing that this was an out-and-out comedy. The entire team discusses how absolutely bonkers Ettis is as a character.

Kklak! It’s the Annual Malcolm Hulke Lizard Extravaganza®, as we bang-a-gong for the children of the revolution as we take on T. Rexes in Invasion of the Dinosaurs! The Doctor and Sarah return to London, only to be confronted by a conspiracy to which almost everyone is involved, and some of Ray Harryhausen’s cast-offs. Ah well, you can’t win ‘em all.
Over the course of the episode, Reilly explains his suspicions on how Spielberg may have approached this as the low water mark for the effects of Jurassic Park, Anthony compares the colour and the black & white versions of Part One, Don theorises that Benton is the only sane member of UNIT at this point, and Julie is happy that Benton is finally allowed to have some tea. The entire crew take turns at comparing deserted London to various horror movies.

It’s a fresh start as we kick off Season 11 with Robert Holmes’ excellent The Time Warrior, in which we say “hello!” to both the legendary Sarah Jane Smith and the iconic monsters known as the Sontarans! Add into the mix some comedy Saxons, some pathetic Normans, and plenty of sci-fi elements, and we’re onto a winner. Maybe. You’ll have to listen to find out what we actually think of this one!
Over the course of the episode, Anthony finds himself amused by Lynx not knowing what a woman is, Don finds himself thinking of ways to add more suspense to the plot, Julie complains at the length of time it takes to get a woman on screen (9 mins and 34 seconds), and Reilly questions some of the directing. The entire crew find themselves once again questioning the Brigadier’s sanity.

It’s time for another season retrospective, as we look back on the entirety of Season 10! And what a season it’s been – all three Doctors, an attempt at a 12-part Dalek epic, giant maggots in an abandoned mine in South Wales, and some dishrags. Well, that last one shows that you can’t win ‘em all! Still, the Pertwee era is absolutely flying by – we can’t believe that we’ve only got one more season to go!
