Doctor Who: Watchers in the Fourth Dimension
Episode 87: Hot Dino on Dino Action (Invasion of the Dinosaurs)

Episode 87: Hot Dino on Dino Action (Invasion of the Dinosaurs)

June 19, 2022

Kklak! It’s the Annual Malcolm Hulke Lizard Extravaganza®, as we bang-a-gong for the children of the revolution as we take on T. Rexes in Invasion of the Dinosaurs! The Doctor and Sarah return to London, only to be confronted by a conspiracy to which almost everyone is involved, and some of Ray Harryhausen’s cast-offs. Ah well, you can’t win ‘em all.

Over the course of the episode, Reilly explains his suspicions on how Spielberg may have approached this as the low water mark for the effects of Jurassic Park, Anthony compares the colour and the black & white versions of Part One, Don theorises that Benton is the only sane member of UNIT at this point, and Julie is happy that Benton is finally allowed to have some tea. The entire crew take turns at comparing deserted London to various horror movies.

Episode 86: Absolute Rubeish (The Time Warrior)

Episode 86: Absolute Rubeish (The Time Warrior)

June 5, 2022

It’s a fresh start as we kick off Season 11 with Robert Holmes’ excellent The Time Warrior, in which we say “hello!” to both the legendary Sarah Jane Smith and the iconic monsters known as the Sontarans! Add into the mix some comedy Saxons, some pathetic Normans, and plenty of sci-fi elements, and we’re onto a winner. Maybe. You’ll have to listen to find out what we actually think of this one!

Over the course of the episode, Anthony finds himself amused by Lynx not knowing what a woman is, Don finds himself thinking of ways to add more suspense to the plot, Julie complains at the length of time it takes to get a woman on screen (9 mins and 34 seconds), and Reilly questions some of the directing. The entire crew find themselves once again questioning the Brigadier’s sanity.

Episode 85: Terry Nation Bingo Card (Season 10 Retrospective)

Episode 85: Terry Nation Bingo Card (Season 10 Retrospective)

May 22, 2022

It’s time for another season retrospective, as we look back on the entirety of Season 10! And what a season it’s been – all three Doctors, an attempt at a 12-part Dalek epic, giant maggots in an abandoned mine in South Wales, and some dishrags. Well, that last one shows that you can’t win ‘em all! Still, the Pertwee era is absolutely flying by – we can’t believe that we’ve only got one more season to go!

Over the course of the episode, Julie riles against all forms of bureaucracy, Don tries to sneak in a Big Finish reference into the awards, Anthony gets mad about CSO, and Reilly figures out the optimal drink and monster pairing. Finally, the entire crew contemplate a potential Blake’s 7 spin-off of the podcast.

If you would like to watch along with us, the whole season is available for streaming at both Britbox US (https://www.britbox.com) and Britbox UK (https://www.britbox.co.uk). Bonus Episode 20: Kinderhorror (Big Finish - The Scorchies)

Bonus Episode 20: Kinderhorror (Big Finish - The Scorchies)

May 15, 2022

It’s time for a bonus episode, in which all four of us are joined by our good friend Naomi (aka @thewhovian_gal on Instagram), as we discuss the Season 10-adjacent Big Finish adventure The Scorchies! Join us as we talk about one of the most weird and bonkers stories to date! Oh, and did we mention that this is Don’s first Big Finish experience? Because it’s Don’s first Big Finish experience!

Along the way, Don focuses on Scorchies’ the absurdly dark back story, Naomi and Julie bond over their mutual love of Sergeant Benton (and dislike of Captain Yates), Reilly questions the mechanics behind the reversal of reversing the polarity of the neutron flow, and Anthony embarrassingly confuses two of his co-hosts. The entire crew try to figure out which Scorchie is which, and which ones are their favourites (and Reilly gets a little upset at Julie’s omission of Cool Cat).

Episode 84: At Last, Welsh Teeth! (The Green Death)

Episode 84: At Last, Welsh Teeth! (The Green Death)

May 8, 2022

This episode, we’re off to the valleys to fight against greedy corporations, green slime, and giant maggots, for the most Welsh Doctor Who story of all time, as we discuss the one and only The Green Death! Join us as we talk stereotypes, hippies, and charismatic computers, and (with sorrow) say goodbye to a companion that we have really grown to love.

Over the course of the episode, Anthony brings out the Welsh side of his heritage, Don imagines a version of this story where BOSS was a computerized version of Tobias Vaughn, Julie finds herself disappointed at seeing the Brigadier in a suit, and Reilly wonders whether the loudness of the Doctor’s plaid killed the giant fly. The entire crew fall in love with the Doctor’s various disguises in this serial.

Episode 83: Terry Nation’s Greatest Hits (Planet of the Daleks)

Episode 83: Terry Nation’s Greatest Hits (Planet of the Daleks)

April 24, 2022

It’s Terry Nation’s Greatest Hits as we discuss Planet of the Daleks – a story where he appears to have put all of his favourite past plot points in a hat, drawn them out at random, and attempted to make a coherent story out of the results! Join us as we keep track of the TerryTropes and discuss, among other things, whether or not this makes for a good story.

Over the course of the episode, Reilly expresses the opinion that this is one of the most disgusting Doctor Who serials we’ve covered to date, Julie gets excited about woodwind, Anthony tries to argue that there is a reasonable (albeit poorly represented) connection with Frontier in Space, and Don digs out Terry Nation’s original titles for each individual episode. The entire cast discuss how frustrating Vaber’s general anger issues are.

Episode 82: Too Dumb to Live (Frontier in Space)

Episode 82: Too Dumb to Live (Frontier in Space)

April 10, 2022

This episode, we go on a tour of the galaxy’s finest jail cells, featuring appearances from the Master! Ogrons! A few Daleks! Draconians! And future humanity’s most dictatorial regime to date! It’s a rather grim vision of the future in Frontier in Space! Join us as we keep track of the number of times that the Doctor and Jo are incarcerated, and generally despair at how so many people *on both sides* repeatedly ignore what they’re trying to say.

Over the course of the episode, Don advances his theories about the Third Doctor’s anecdotes being most nonsense, Anthony denies the possibility that General Williams could be his future descendant, Julie praises Jo’s choice of (sensible) outfit, and Reilly dreams of seeing the Ogron version of The Office! The entire crew find themselves enamoured with the world building presented in the story.

Episode 81: Googly Eyes on Socks (Carnival of Monsters)

Episode 81: Googly Eyes on Socks (Carnival of Monsters)

March 27, 2022

It’s an unusually low-key story for the Pertwee era, as we handle the classic dual menace of bureaucracy and sock puppets in Carnival of Monsters! Join us as we talk budget serials, grey worlds, Holmesian double acts, monster cameos, and the Doctor’s long-awaited return to regular space-and-time adventuring!

Over the course of the episode, Anthony finds himself alone in appreciating the bureaucrats of the serial, Julie continues to find herself please with the direction of the scores this season, Reilly enthuses over the monster design, and Don dreams of re-editing the entire serial. The entire crew find themselves disappointed at the general lack of monsters promised by the story’s title.

Episode 80: Doctor Who and the Other Two (The Three Doctors)

March 13, 2022

We’re kicking off Season 10 of Doctor Who in style as our two past stars of the show, Patrick Troughton and William Hartnell, team up with Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor to defeat a truly galactic threat in The Three Doctors! Join us as we talk about this truly special union, the impact it has on our current cast, and whether or not the Brigadier goes a bit bonkers as a result of this serial…

Over the course of the episode, Don ponders whether this serial was sponsored by Clearasil, Reilly re-envisions the fight between the Doctor and Omega as a WWE smackdown-type event, Anthony talks about the fan theory of Season 6B, and Julie finds herself appalled at the prospect of a romantic liaison between her beloved Jamie and Jo. The entire crew discusses whether the Brigadier and Sergeant Benton now count as full-blown companions after travelling in the TARDIS this serial.

Bonus Episode 19: Waiting for Littmann (Big Finish - Operation: Hellfire)

February 20, 2022

It’s our Season 9 Big Finish bonus episode, as Anthony and Julie are joined by Reilly for his first Big Finish experience with a tale featuring spycraft, Nazis, and the occult as we discuss Operation: Hellfire, from The Third Doctor Adventures, Volume 6.

Along the way, Julie gets frustrated at Jo’s inability to adequately go undercover, Reilly realizes that he’s a prime candidate for occult sacrifice, and Anthony once again expresses his distaste for the phrase “wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey.” All three of us have a robust discussion on how awful the Time Lords are, and particularly the one that appears in this story.

Episode 78: Time Ram, Thank You Ma’am! (The Time Monster)

February 13, 2022

It’s another season finale as everyone’s favourite moustache-twirling renegade Time Lord returns to unleash the power of Kronos on the universe. Oh, and cause a headache for everyone across the fandom the destruction of Atlantis for the third(?) time. Join us as we discuss what is possibly the thirstiest Doctor Who story to date in The Time Monster!

Over the course of the episode, Julie appreciates Ruth’s upfront-and-centre feminism, Don expresses his horror over the new TARDIS set, Reilly talks about the Master’s love of old administrators, and Anthony ponders whether Dudders upped his game to avoid being permanently replaced. The entire crew question the wisdom of the design of the Doctor’s rather phallic time detector…

Episode 77: Flagrant Abuse of Paisley (The Mutants)

January 30, 2022

We’re heading off-world for the second time in a season... What is this, the Troughton era!? Actually, no! The Doctor’s just off on another bizarre mission for the Time Lords to help a poor, oppressed species evolve into superbeings because… reasons? Well, whatever the reasons may be, we’ll be talking about them, as we discuss The Mutants!

Over the course of the episode, Anthony plays historian (again), Julie gets offended by the term “munt,” Reilly espouses his admiration for the direction, and Don ponders alternate casting with Matt Berry as Varan. The entire crew ponder the question of whether or not there are women on Solos, and if not, how the Solonians reproduce...

Episode 76: Rise of the Moustache Brigade (The Sea Devils)

Episode 76: Rise of the Moustache Brigade (The Sea Devils)

January 16, 2022

The Silurians are back, but in aquatic form! And disappointingly called Sea Devils and not Sealurians, because someone decided that they wanted to avoid further scientific inaccuracies. Disappointment over the name of the creatures aside, we spend the episode discussing The Sea Devils - a rollicking adventure that also includes everyone's favourite bearded Time Lord renegade, as well as some jaunts with the Royal Navy. What fun!

Over the course of the episode, Julie praises the fine Naval beards on display, Anthony overuses nautical puns (much to the chagrin of the rest of the team), Don takes note of the amount of food consumed in this serial, and Reilly pinpoints the moment that the Third Doctor becomes “cool.” The entire team takes note of Jo’s outfit and ponder the question of style vs. dry cleaning bills.

Episode 75: Arcturus Shot First! (The Curse of Peladon)

January 2, 2022

We’re off to an alien planet for the first time in Season 9, in The Curse of Peladon, as we head to Peladon, where there’s a bit of a kerfuffle on whether or not the planet should join the Galactic Federation. We talk politics, giant green phalluses, obvious villains not being that villainous, and the continually evolving kinder, gentler Third Doctor!

Over the course of the episode, Don expresses his love for Arcturus (the most metal-looking creature to date in the show), Julie finds Jo’s sneezes adorable, Reilly gets excited over model shots, and Anthony once again wonders if Jo realizes that she’s bearding for Yates. The entire crew find themselves loving the nostalgic notes of the serial.

Bonus Episode 18: Full-On Chumbley (Galaxy 4 Animation)

December 26, 2021

For a very special bonus episode, we are joined by our friends Diana and Jenn from the Doctor Who: On the Rocks podcast as we jump back to the Hartnell-era to discuss the recent animation of Galaxy 4! Taking a best of both worlds approach from our two shows, we kick off the episode by discussing the Penderyn “Celt” whisky, Anthony talks about the story’s journey from being lost to animation, we launch into a robust discussion about the animation, re-rate the story, and make the all-important determination of whether the story is “neat or not?”

Along the way, Anthony feels pride in the Welsh half of his heritage, Diana expresses her love of Steven’s sass, Reilly tries to annoy Don through his viewing preferences for the animation, Julie fixates on Steven’s floofy hair, Don gets nostalgic for non-synth music, and Jenn compares the Doctor to the Quaker Oats man. We all find ourselves disappointed in the design of all the humanoid characters.

Since not everyone may be interested in hearing us talk whisky, here are the segment timestamps for this episode:

Episode 74: Slight Moment of the Daleks (Day of the Daleks)

December 19, 2021

It’s guerillas, gorillas, and Daleks, as we kick off Season 9 with Day of the Daleks - a tale of peace conferences, dystopian futures, and bootstrap paradoxes. Will this be the season where the Third Doctor finally comes into his own, or will we continue to struggle with his bad attitude? And will the Production Team finally give poor Jo something to do again!?

Over the course of the episode, Julie sets a new record for losing her patience with the lads, Anthony redefines UNIT’s remit, Don goes above and beyond on the assignment and watches two versions of the story, and Reilly espouses his “Law of the Conservation of Dickery.” The entire team discuss their delight at how much improved the Doctor is after Season 8 – but will it continue?

Bonus Episode 17: Who‘s Who and Did Horton Hear Him? (2021 Musical Holiday Special)

December 12, 2021

Following the precedent set last year, the Watchers once again gather for a special holiday episode in which they discuss a few Doctor Who-related musical “classics.” Once again guided by our very own Don, we kick things off with Jon Pertwee’s spoken word masterpiece “Who is the Doctor?” Next, we follow that up with “Who’s Who?” by Roberta Tovey (aka Suzie Who from the Dalek movies), before wrapping it all up with the Delaware version of the Doctor Who theme. Halp.

Episode 73: Peace Through Chicken in Our Time (Season 8 Retrospective)

December 5, 2021

We’re finding it tough to believe that we’re already done with another season! And what a Masterful one Season 8 has been. Literally full of the Master! With that in mind, it’s time for our customary season retrospective, as we look back on the height of the UNIT Family™, Roger Delgado’s superb turn as everyone’s favourite villainous Time Lord, and even a long-awaited jaunt away from Earth!

During the episode, Anthony confesses his love of Mr Chinn (Legend of Politics) and his chicken drumstick, Julie steadily loses patience with Anthony’s nonsense, Don aligns his musical opinions to those of Julie, and Reilly finds himself growing increasingly frustrated with the amount of gunfights. The entire team find themselves more united than ever before in their opinions of a full season.
