It’s our Season 9 Big Finish bonus episode, as Anthony and Julie are joined by Reilly for his first Big Finish experience with a tale featuring spycraft, Nazis, and the occult as we discuss Operation: Hellfire, from The Third Doctor Adventures, Volume 6.
Along the way, Julie gets frustrated at Jo’s inability to adequately go undercover, Reilly realizes that he’s a prime candidate for occult sacrifice, and Anthony once again expresses his distaste for the phrase “wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey.” All three of us have a robust discussion on how awful the Time Lords are, and particularly the one that appears in this story.

The Silurians are back, but in aquatic form! And disappointingly called Sea Devils and not Sealurians, because someone decided that they wanted to avoid further scientific inaccuracies. Disappointment over the name of the creatures aside, we spend the episode discussing The Sea Devils - a rollicking adventure that also includes everyone's favourite bearded Time Lord renegade, as well as some jaunts with the Royal Navy. What fun!
Over the course of the episode, Julie praises the fine Naval beards on display, Anthony overuses nautical puns (much to the chagrin of the rest of the team), Don takes note of the amount of food consumed in this serial, and Reilly pinpoints the moment that the Third Doctor becomes “cool.” The entire team takes note of Jo’s outfit and ponder the question of style vs. dry cleaning bills.

We’re off to an alien planet for the first time in Season 9, in The Curse of Peladon, as we head to Peladon, where there’s a bit of a kerfuffle on whether or not the planet should join the Galactic Federation. We talk politics, giant green phalluses, obvious villains not being that villainous, and the continually evolving kinder, gentler Third Doctor!
Over the course of the episode, Don expresses his love for Arcturus (the most metal-looking creature to date in the show), Julie finds Jo’s sneezes adorable, Reilly gets excited over model shots, and Anthony once again wonders if Jo realizes that she’s bearding for Yates. For a very special bonus episode, we are joined by our friends Diana and Jenn from the Doctor Who: On the Rocks podcast as we jump back to the Hartnell-era to discuss the recent animation of Galaxy 4! Taking a best of both worlds approach from our two shows, we kick off the episode by discussing the Penderyn “Celt” whisky, Anthony talks about the story’s journey from being lost to animation, we launch into a robust discussion about the animation, re-rate the story, and make the all-important determination of whether the story is “neat or not?”

It’s guerillas, gorillas, and Daleks, as we kick off Season 9 with Day of the Daleks - a tale of peace conferences, dystopian futures, and bootstrap paradoxes. Will this be the season where the Third Doctor finally comes into his own, or will we continue to struggle with his bad attitude? And will the Production Team finally give poor Jo something to do again!?
Over the course of the episode, Julie sets a new record for losing her patience with the lads, Anthony redefines UNIT’s remit, Don goes above and beyond on the assignment and watches two versions of the story, and Reilly espouses his “Law of the Conservation of Dickery.” The entire team discuss their delight at how much improved the Doctor is after Season 8 – but will it continue?

We’re finding it tough to believe that we’re already done with another season! And what a Masterful one Season 8 has been. Literally full of the Master! With that in mind, it’s time for our customary season retrospective, as we look back on the height of the UNIT Family™, Roger Delgado’s superb turn as everyone’s favourite villainous Time Lord, and even a long-awaited jaunt away from Earth!
During the episode, Anthony confesses his love of Mr Chinn (Legend of Politics) and his chicken drumstick, Julie steadily loses patience with Anthony’s nonsense, Don aligns his musical opinions to those of Julie, and Reilly finds himself growing increasingly frustrated with the amount of gunfights. It’s a classic tale of occult shenanigans in a small South West England village as the Master dresses up as a vicar, Benton finds himself an on-screen admirer, the Doctor goes hard on the science-vs-magic debate, and Jo is (for some bizarre reason) willing to sacrifice herself for him, even though he’s awful to her for the whole story. It can only be Season 8’s finale, The Dæmons!
During the episode, Julie’s love of Benton reaches a whole new level, Reilly espouses his admiration for Professor Horner, Don accuses the show of trying to have its cake and eat it, and Anthony gets his occult on. We also all discuss how a Sergeant Benton & Miss Hawthorne spin-off would be absolutely perfect.

We’re on alien planet for the first time since The Krotons! It’s corporations vs. colonizers, with an ancient weapon of mass destruction in the background! Oh, and since its Season 8, the Master shows up, in disguise. Sort of. Whatever. It’s one of the less-loved serials of the season in Colony in Space!
During the episode, Reilly gets his lawyer on, Julie gets frustrated at the role given to Jo (or, rather, lack of role), Anthony discusses the sunk cost fallacy and its relevance to this serial, and Don has never been so happy to see a quarry. We all contemplate this serial's similarities to the very earliest serials in Doctor Who.

It’s a bonus episode of Watchers in the Fourth Dimension! Recorded as a LIVE panel in conjunction with DragonCon’s Brittrack for DragonCon Goes Virtual 2021, we bring you our discussion on Doctor Who: The Early Years - a beginners’ guide to the first two Doctors, broken up into six episodes, much like many of the serials of the 1960s:
Episode 1: The Quest for Time – we discuss how New Series fans can discover the Classic Series, and some of the entry points into it.
Episode 2: The Changing Face of _______ – the Watchers sum up the personalities of first two Doctors and compare them to their modern successors.
Episode 3: The Children of Time – our panel discusses the role of the companions in early Doctor Who, how that role changes through the years, and once again, compares them to their modern successors.
Episode 4: The Evolution of the Daleks – it wouldn’t be Doctor Who without his greatest enemies! We look at their early appearances and discuss the phenomenon that was Dalekmania.
Episode 5: The Emergence of the Cybermen – with the Daleks being phased out, the show turned to a secondary “dominant” race of monsters. In this segment, we look back on their early appearances, and how the earliest Cybermen were brought back in the modern era.
Episode 6: The Recommendations of Rassilon – finally, we all provide some recommendations of highlights of the first two Doctors for newbies to the black & white era of Doctor.
