Episode 39: A More Localized Terrible Idea (The Moonbase)
Sunday Aug 09, 2020
Sunday Aug 09, 2020
Everyone’s second favourite Doctor Who monsters are back, as the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension once again encounter the Cybermen, along with weather control, poisoned sugar, and a rag-tag group of Europeans. It can only be The Moonbase!
Over the course of the episode, Don talks about Cybermen design, Reilly is disappointed by the absence of the Doctor wearing a hat in this story, Anthony raves over the international vibe of the moonbase, and Julie questions the obsession that fiction has with controlling the weather. The entire crew discusses the alleged misogyny in the story, with Polly being sent off to make the coffee (which actually leads to the main mystery of the first couple of episodes being solved…).
If you want to watch along with us, half of this story is sadly missing. However, the BBC have released the surviving episodes on DVD, along with animations of the two missing episodes, and you can acquire it through either Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3E0ap6l) or Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/2XuZG4c).

Episode 38: Zar-off the Chain (The Underwater Menace)
Sunday Jul 26, 2020
Sunday Jul 26, 2020
The Watchers in the Fourth Dimension discuss mad scientists, fish people, and everyone's new favourite companion (or is that favourite new companion?), as they tackle one of the most-maligned stories of the black and white era - The Underwater Menace!
Over the course of the episode, Don talks about the horror elements of the story, Reilly discusses Professor Zaroff’s worst work day ever, Anthony has some sound issues and sounds like he’s recording from the lost city of Atlantis (rather than his usual location of Atlanta!), and Julie praises the new Doctor’s ethics. Unsurprisingly, the entire crew spends some time discussing whether or not Professor Zaroff was really intelligent or really stupid (regardless of his levels of craziness).
If you want to watch along with us, half of this story is sadly missing. However, the BBC have released the surviving episodes on DVD, along with somewhat lackluster reconstructions of the two missing episodes, and you can acquire it through either Amazon US (https://amzn.to/2Z1YvKt) or Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3lTWI2s). Episode 37: Algie Ffinch‘s Bad Day (The Highlanders)
Sunday Jul 12, 2020
Sunday Jul 12, 2020
Moving full steam ahead with the Patrick Troughton era, the intrepid Watchers in the Fourth Dimension head to what could seems like the set of Outlander, as they discuss what is the last “pure” historical adventure for quite a long time – it’s The Highlanders!
During the discussion, Don finds himself concerned over Ben’s lack of safe firearm handling, Reilly makes what is probably the first (and also probably last) ever comparison between The Highlanders and Martin Scorsese’s Casino, Anthony talks about how crazy the new Doctor is in this story, and Julie talks Jacobite history. The entire crew, of course, discusses hats (no surprise there – we have proclaimed ourselves as the most hat-friendly Doctor Who podcast).
For those who want to watch along with us, this story is sadly missing. Sunday Jun 28, 2020

After 35 episodes, The Watchers in the Fourth Dimension move onto the next chapter of Doctor Who, as they head off to the planet Vulcan (no, not that one!) to kick-off the Patrick Troughton era, as the discuss The Power of the Daleks!
During the discussion, Reilly talks about the physicality of Patrick Troughton’s acting, Don compares the Daleks to high school girls, Anthony gets metaphysical, and Julie finds herself pleasantly surprised by how Janley’s role grows through the story. The entire team talks about the new Doctor’s choices in hats (because we’re a hat-obsessed podcast).

Episode 35: Brit for Hire (Hartnell-era Retrospective)
Sunday Jun 14, 2020
Sunday Jun 14, 2020
Having made their way through the entirety of the William Hartnell era of Doctor Who, the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension are joined by a guest host for the very first time, as R Alan Siler moderates a retrospective discussion of the entirety of the era.
Over the course of the discussion, the crew touch on a wide range of topics, including which missing story would benefit the most from animation, the most challenging or radically different episodes of the time, and how the era reflected the socio-political situation of the time. Anthony and Don manage to get their final blows in against Richard Martin and John Wiles, respectively. Finally, things get rather silly when Alan surprises everyone with a few rounds of “Snog, Marry, Avoid!,” with some rather outrageous options.

Episode 33: Pirates of the Caribboring (The Smugglers)
Sunday May 17, 2020
Sunday May 17, 2020
In this episode, “Pirates of the Caribboring” the Watchers kick-start Season 4 with the swashbuckling adventure known only as “The Smugglers.” Oh... maybe “swashbuckling” and “adventure” oversells it a bit?
This episode, Anthony talks censorship, Julie gets excited about the shirtless men of the story, Don discusses his least-favourite trope, and Reilly highlights the Doctor’s boozing. Spoiler alert: the entire team doesn't find much to enjoy about this story.
For those who want to watch along with us, this story is sadly missing. Sunday May 03, 2020
In this episode, “No (Terrance) Dicks, No Lava Lamps” the Watchers crew tread somewhat familiar, yet slightly different ground, as they discuss the second Peter Cushing Dalek movie, Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.
This episode, Anthony can’t resist a final cheeky dig at Richard Martin, Julie talks about the diminishment of the role of women in the film, Don gets excited over the use of fetish gear, and Reilly ponders how Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 B.C.(!) might have worked out. Naturally, the entire team find themselves repeatedly comparing the film to the original TV serial.

This episode, Don talks about how Katarina could have worked as a companion, Anthony flip-flops on a couple of things, Julie praises the women of the show, and Reilly tries his hardest not to keep jabbing at The Gunfighters. The entire crew are united in their praise of two particular stories… but which ones? And how on Earth does Michael Bloomberg get involved in all of this!?!? Well, you’ll have to listen to find out! (Obviously – we’re not giving you those kinds of spoilers in the blurb!)

Sunday Mar 29, 2020
Sunday Mar 29, 2020
It’s March 2020, and the Watchers in the Fourth Dimension have reached the end of Steven Taylor’s time as the Doctor’s companion. With COVID-19 running rampant across the world, and everyone (hopefully) practicing social distancing, we are here to help you stave off boredom for an hour, by bringing you a special bonus episode, in which Anthony interviews the man who played Steven himself, Peter Purves!
Their conversation meanders through Peter’s career in theatre and in TV, starting with his time in repertory theatre, to Doctor Who, and into presenting the likes of Blue Peter, Record Breakers, and the Crufts Dog Show, before finally coming back to Doctor Who through Big Finish’s audio productions. This convention panel-length interview is truly something to keep you entertained at home during this time.
As a thank you to Peter for his time, we made a $200 donation to Dogs for Good, a charity providing assistance dogs to those in need. If you would like to support this worthy cause, please follow the link and click on “Donate now.”

Episode 29: Tor Loser (The Savages)
Sunday Mar 22, 2020
Sunday Mar 22, 2020
In this episode, “Tor Loser,” the team are off to a place where a ruling upperclass lives off the energy and lifeforce of an oppressed working class. No, it’s not Victorian Britain, but actually The Savages - a story that is bizarrely overlooked by a lot of fans, given that it's really quite good.
This episode, Anthony gets confused on which story we’re meant to be talking about, Julie gets Savage on Reilly, Don doesn’t bash John Wiles (for a change), and Reilly talks about the Doctor’s Reacting Vibrator. The entire crew is surprised when Dodo is actually useful for a change.
For those who want to watch along with us, this story is sadly missing. Episode 28: Flirting with Competence (The Gunfighters)
Sunday Mar 08, 2020
Sunday Mar 08, 2020
In this episode, “Flirting with Competence,” we’re off to the Wild West so that the Doctor can get a tooth extracted… wait, what!? It’s the kind of thing that could only happen in 60s Doctor Who, and this story is The Gunfighters! Will the Watchers survive the repeated refrains of the infamous Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon?
This time around, Anthony raves about the sets and the costumes, Reilly discusses his struggles with Westerns, Julie sings a delightful little ditty based on The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon, and Don finds himself at odds with Reilly’s opinion for the first time in a while. The entire team discusses accents – unsurprisingly, given that three of the four cast members are born and bred Americans.
For those who want to watch along with us, this story is one that still exists in its entirety. You can get this story on DVD as a standalone release from Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3n4JaAG), or as part of the Earth Story boxset from Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3FZPjXp). Episode 27: I Want to Talk About Chairs (The Celestial Toymaker)
Sunday Feb 23, 2020
Sunday Feb 23, 2020
In this episode, “I Want to Talk About Chairs,” we’re off to the realm of an extremely bored immortal with a penchant for fun and games. That’s right – it’s The Celestial Toymaker, a story that undoubtedly divides opinion in fandom.
This episode, Anthony talks about his fear of clowns, Reilly gets excited about the notion of the return of Sgt. Ruggs and Mrs. Wiggs, Julie talks about chairs, and Don talks about why John Wiles was so bad for the very last time. The entire team discuss whether or not the supporting characters are all meant to be the same three characters in different roles or not.
For those who want to watch along with us, this story is another one that is mostly missing. You can find the narrated audio for Episodes 1-3 as part of the The Lost Episodes: Collection Two through either Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3BT5dAh) or Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3vlQnzY). The surviving episode, Episode 4, is available in the Lost in Time DVD boxset at both Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3pea8s9) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3pmd2em). For listeners in the UK, it is also available through Britbox UK (http://www.britbox.co.uk). Episode 26: George Maharis, Risk Taker (The Ark)
Sunday Feb 09, 2020
Sunday Feb 09, 2020
This week, we discuss a thrilling adventure in which new companion Dodo is suffering from a cold. That’s right – it’s The Ark, a story with some rather uncomfortable undertones.
This episode, Anthony talks British colonialism, Reilly makes use of his film degree by praising the direction, Julie explains medical things, and Don talks about the trope of invisible beings with supernatural powers in sci-fi. All four of the cast keep coming back to the question of whether or not this story’s rather racist undertones were by intent or out of ignorance.
For those who want to watch along with us, this story is one of the few stories from Season 3 that exists in its entirety! You can find the DVD on either Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3BU70p5) or Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3jcweY8). If you prefer streaming, it’s also available on both Britbox US (http://www.britbox.com) and Britbox UK (http://www.britbox.co.uk)!

With the Doctor and Steven now travelling alone after the events of the Dalek epic, we follow them on their next adventure in a fun romp called The Massacre. Uh, except... maybe it's not a fun romp, with a name like that.
This time around, Julie gets historical, Anthony gets excited about hats, Reilly compares Steven to a lost child looking for his Dad, and Don once again continues his vendetta against John Wiles. The entire crew talk debate whether this story is the missing classic that received fandom wisdom believes it to be.
For those who want to watch along with us, this story is sadly missing. Episode 23: Poppycock and Nonsense (The Daleks‘ Master Plan - Episodes 1-6)
Sunday Dec 29, 2019
Sunday Dec 29, 2019
This episode, we finally get around to that Dalek epic that was teased a couple of stories back… yes, we’ve finally made it to The Daleks’ Master Plan! Since the televised story was twelve episodes long, it’s going to take us two podcasts to get through. Thus in this episode, Poppycock and Nonsense, we discuss episodes 1 through 6.
Along the way, Anthony says “absurdly” an absurd number of times, Julie questions whether the Doctor will actually have any lasting memories of Katarina, Reilly draws some parallels between this story and The Phantom Menace, and Don enthuses over the atmosphere of mistrust in the story. The entire team debate whether it would have been better or worse if it had actually been Vicki that got flushed out of that airlock.
For those who want to watch along with us, the surviving episodes are available as part of the Lost in Time DVD set, which is available through both Amazon US (https://amzn.to/3pea8s9) and Amazon UK (https://amzn.to/3pmd2em).
